Pastor Sungkyu's ministry is shaped by a life lived between cultures. Born in South Korea and raised in the Korean Presbyterian church, he immigrated to Canada after graduating from high school. The years since have given him a heart for building bridges between traditions, languages, and above all generations. He believes a church should be a community where people of every age and background find a spiritual home.
He earned his undergraduate degree in Biblical Studies at Trinity Western University and his Master of Divinity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary's South Hamilton campus in Massachusetts. Those years deepened his love for digging into the original text of Scripture and his commitment to expository preaching. Over the years, he has served congregations in Boston, New Jersey, and Toronto, and he has a gift for making God's Word clear, practical, and warmly accessible, whether to a newcomer walking through the doors for the first time or to a believer who has known the story for decades.
At Maple Ridge Christian Reformed Church, Pastor Sungkyu longs to see a congregation growing in love for God, for its city, and for one another. He believes a pastor's calling is to equip God's people, so that every member discovers their gifts and lives out the gospel in daily life. He hopes to see emerging generations and new families rooted in Christ while honoring the wisdom of those who have served faithfully for decades. Prayer is the foundation of his ministry. His desire is for the church to be a place that is safe, supported, respected, and loved, one that reflects the grace of Jesus and blesses Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.
Outside of preaching and pastoral care, you will likely find him building Lego sets, practicing his beginner woodworking, or discovering a new local eatery. Above all, he is a relational pastor who loves gathering around the table, listening to people's stories, and walking with them through every season of life.
